A practical homeowner's guide. Calm, specific, and short enough to read before the next pass.
What you are actually seeing
Most overhead flights are ordinary: a neighbour learning, a real-estate shoot, a kid on a birthday present, a commercial operator on a job. A smaller number are careless. A smaller number still are targeted.
Your first job is not to decide which. Your first job is to notice clearly. Listen for a steady high buzz. Watch for hover, sideways movement, and repeated loops over the same yard. Birds flap. Airliners do not stop.
The ten-minute plan
Stay on the ground. Do not chase it. Do not stand under it.
Film the aircraft and a landmark — roof, fence, tree — in the same shot. Write the time. Estimate height as rooftop, treetop, or much higher. Note direction in and direction out. If a camera looks pointed at a window, pool, or backyard, write that down as an observation, not a conclusion.
If you have a Remote ID app, open it, wait, screenshot. Then stop. You already have more than most people bring to a report.
The legal line, in plain language
You do not own the sky above your house. National aviation authorities regulate drones as aircraft. Recreational pilots typically must keep visual line of sight, stay under the local height limit (often around 120 metres / 400 feet), and follow the rest of the local operating rules.
Interfering with an aircraft is illegal. Document from the ground. If it feels like harassment or a privacy issue, that is a police matter. If it looks like unsafe flying, that is your aviation authority. If someone is in danger now, that is emergency services.
When a conversation is enough
If the operator is nearby and it feels safe: “Your drone has been over our backyard. Please keep it off our property.” Most hobby pilots stop. You do not need a speech. You need one clear sentence and a date in your log in case it happens again.
When it is a pattern
One pass is a data point. Three evenings in a week is a pattern. Low hovering with a camera toward private space is a different category from a transit at treetop height.
That is why the log exists. Dates turn a feeling into a record. A record is what official channels can use.

Film drone + landmark
House, fence, or tree in the same frame. Keep rolling.
- 3
Write the facts
Time, duration, height, direction in, direction out, behaviour.
- 4
Screenshot the app
Remote ID if anything shows. Save to the same album as the video.
- 5
Decide the next move
Pass-through: log it. Neighbour: one sentence if safe. Pattern or harm: report.
